New 2 me Scout II - First time starting it up after sitting..

Post by AV8R Transport »

Hello, I am pulling home my first Scout project this comming weekend, PO told me the engine is good, was a driver then parked for a small upgrade and the time marches on for varios reasons,,,so it has been sitting in a garage for 6 years, no motor rotation, no storage prep etc, I will be bringing it back to life shortly after I get it home.

This is not my first project, I am a car guy in many areas but totally new to Scouts and open to all ideas.

My first question is about getting the oil primed and getting oil pressure before I attempt to start it. So I am looking for info on that, can it be done similar to how its done on a small block Chevy? I.E. Remove the Distributor and spin the oil pump shaft that is driven from underneath the distrubutor?

It is a Scout II, a 1973, has a 345 CI with an Auto
I plan on other prep too, before starting, thought I would start with a post like this and get some help from an informed group that I hope to be engaging with on trails soon.
I could google this but where's the fun in that?

Yes you can prime the pump with a long screw driver and drill.
I highly suggest getting an service manual from Binderbooks.com, it will be the most valuable tool you will have. Plus, the manual was actually written by IH mechanics that worked on the vehicles.

There is also a San Diego Chapter. We do a lot of work days, meeting up down at Fiesta island. We also have Zoom meeting going on currently bi-weekly.
Shoot me a text at 619-508-3168 and I can put in contact with our President who can add you to our email list and also text messaging app.
