Rear Axle Bearing

Post by Wmontaney »

So last weekend my wife was driving me behind me while I was driving the Scout and she noticed that my right rear tire was moving around like it was out of balence. I took a quick look and weights are still there, and the lug nuts appear to be tight. I will be going to have the tires rotated and balenced.

My question is, is there way to tell if the bearing is going out with out taking the axle out? Would I be able to jack up the scout and grab the top and bottom of the tire and move it for and aft to see if there is any play?

If the bearing is going, what is the bearing I should get?

Thank you

If you raise the tire off the ground & the bearing is going bad, you should be able to move it up n down & in n out I would think. I do not recall the part # though.

Might just be a bent axle too.

you should also get T.A.B.O.R. plates, then your axle cant come out of the housing, regardless of bad bearing/broken axle.

Bill, if you need a 44 axle, I have a chromolly one with a bearing on it and it's even got a tabor plate on the end. I've also got the hardware needed to install it in the housing. I really like the tabor plates, they work well. I've also got the plate for the other side, you could change to at your convenience.

Thank you Tim. I will keep you in mind.
As of right now I appear to be ok. I looked at things and there is no excess movement.
I have been looking at the Tabor plates, but I have the rear disk conversion so I dont know if the plates will work or not.
