putting carb back on T'all

Post by fpscabs »

I am ready to put my rebuilt carb back on the Travelall. What is the best way? Do I use gasket sealer? If so, which one? How much torque? Can I damage if I over torque?

No sealer.

18 ft lbs

Over torquing could strip threads.

If you want to use a sealer, Hylomar Universal Blue is the best there is. It's also expensive but, in my opinion worth the money. This product was originally developed as a sealer for Merlin engines manufactured by Rolls Royce during WWII. You know, the engine that powered the Spitfire and the P51D Mustang, the war birds that rid British and European skies of the ME109. God, I get goosebumps just thinking about the Merlin, the most beautiful engine ever built.
Later, and where I became familiar with it was when Harley Davidson recommended it as the only sealer to be used on their EVO motor. I'm current out of it or I'd offer to give you some. The great thing about HUB is, it's flange and thread sealing properties and how well it works. It will seal up a base gasket leak without any issues and, you'll never have to worry about a base gasket vacume leak again. It also aids in reducing overtorquing carb bolts as it's not necessary. Many people think they need to tighten the bolts down hard and end up either stripping the threads or warping the base. Hylomar seals so well and is such a good gasket dressing that all that goes away, 72-120 in lbs is usually all that's required to seal the base gasket. It remains pliable and easily separates if necessary but holds firmly. Remember it's original purpose, during the war, aircraft mechanics were constantly needing to rebuild these engines quickly and keep the birds flying. They had to have a sealer that worked and with Hylomar they got it.
I would use this on a carb base before any other product. I highly recommend it. It used to be available at NAPA under the Permatex brand. I'm not sure if it's still available locally any longer, last time I bought some, I got it online from the manufacturers distributor. It may still be available at a HD dealer but the price with that bar and shield on the box would make the Amazon price including shipping seem like a bargain. Buy multiple tubes, save on shipping, sell a couple to guys like me who know how good it is.
